August
Lawns:
Annuals:
This is the time of
greatest stress for container plants, so move them to areas that are
partially shaded by house walls, trees, fences or other structures to
protect them from the dryness and overheating caused by too much
sunlight. Pots should be watered daily.
Perennials &
Bulbs: In case
you think bulbs are only for spring, check your garden center.
Fall blooming crocus and spider lilies are available now and offer
immediate results.
Trees &
Shrubs:
Roses:
Now is the time to get
your roses ready for their fall revival, even though it is still hot and
flowering has reduced. Water well once each rainless week, fertilize
monthly and prune out weak or misshapen growth up to one third of the
plant.
Vegetables &
Herbs: Now
is the time to plant the fall garden. Vegetables you can plant
from seed sown directly in the garden include radishes, carrots,
lettuce, spinach, kale, mustard and turnips. Set out vegetable
transplants for fall crops of squash, cucumbers, broccolli and cabbage.
Transplants get a better start if they are shaded the first couple of
weeks.
