November
Lawns:
Continue to overseed
lawns with annual ryegrass.
Annuals:
Plan and plant now for
spring color. Condition your soil and then set out daffodil or
other spring flowering bulbs. Overplant those with cool weather annuals
such as pansies, which will bloom in mild winter weather. The bulbs will
push up through the annuals in spring for a two-layer garden bed.
Perennials &
Bulbs: Now is a
great time to divide perennials in the Middle and Lower South. Use a
digging fork to lift an entire clump of hostas, phlox, ferns and other
clump-forming perennials. Set them back into th soil at original
growing depth after separating them.
Trees &
Shrubs: If trees
and shrubs are showing yellow leaves with greenish veins, they may lack
iron. Apply a chelated iron product to the soil at the rate
recommended on the label. Gardenias and camellias are especially
susceptible.
Vegetables &
Herbs: Stems of
rosemary, bay and lemon verbena may be gathered now while they're in
peak condition.
