Soil Amendments & What They Do

Compost: Loosens soil and all around fertilizer.
Peat moss: Good for lightening soil; breaks down quickly in the south.
Sawdust & Bark: Woody products are good soil amendments. Offset excessive nitrogen with fertilizer.
Lime: If soil is very acid; add lime. Don't guess at whether lime or sulfur is needed. Follow your ph test recommendations and those on the product label.
Bone meal: High in phosphorous.
Greensand: High in potassium, this mineral also loosens the soil.
Cottonseed meal & blood meal: Good sources of nitrogen.
